Q & A with Dr. Keith Atkins - Postdoctoral Scholar

Dr. Keith Atkins, longtime Athens resident and UGA alumnus, joined the ALEC team in May. Learn about Keith’s background and the research he’s conducting about community development.

  1. Where are you from?
I’m originally from North Augusta, South Carolina, but I have lived in the Athens area for over 20 years.

  2. Tell us a little bit about your educational background.
I received each of my degrees from UGA. I have a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and History, a master’s degree in Public Administration, and a Ph.D. in Public Administration and Policy.

  3. What is the focus of your research?
My past research focused on organizations and how they differ between economic sectors. Specifically, I researched how the organizational pride and work motivation differs among public and nonprofit managers. Here at ALEC, my primary focus has been community development processes, how community assets can be mobilized for community and economic development and how these capitals can be used to holistically assess community perceptions and notions of personal agency.

  4. Why are you interested in this field?
I am interested in this field because it allows me to investigate the many challenges faced by smaller communities and also examine how they can invest in and leverage their existing resources to confront these challenges.

  5. Which faculty is your mentor and what is your favorite thing about working with them?
My faculty mentor is Dr. Kevan Lamm. I really enjoy working with Dr. Lamm because he is patient, encouraging, enthusiastic and driven. This results in a work environment that is both motivational and supportive.

  6. What is something you enjoy doing in your free time?
I enjoy spending my free time with my wife and three children (and our dog). Given that our children are all under the age of four, there is never a dull moment. I also enjoy photography, which means we have thousands of pictures of our kids.
